Endura-Stone premium FRP composite is made from fiberglass, resin, and crushed marble. Sourced materials are spun-cast to distribute material evenly across mold walls. The result is a column hard like stone, fully paintable, and impervious to rot, insects, and moisture. FRP is our most-recommended material for exterior porches, pergolas, and covered entries. Structurally rated for loads between 6,000 and 20,000 lbs.
Purely decorative columns shipped in four panels ready to reassemble around a structural post. PVC works like wood but never rots or swells. Ideal for budget-conscious residential projects where wrapping a treated 4x4 or 6x6 post is required. Smooth paint-ready surface with excellent workability.
Endura-Lite pultruded fiberglass columns deliver the highest pound-for-pound load ratings. They are 65% lighter than FRP. Built for tall load-bearing porches and commercial colonnades where lighter columns are ideal but load requirements cannot be compromised.
Extruded aluminum delivers structural strength in a corrosion-resistant package. Best for storefronts and coastal projects where salt exposure is a concern. High structural capacity with factory finishes that eliminate field painting.
For load-bearing applications, choose unsplit fiberglass (5,000–20,000 lbs) or aluminum (8,000–43,000 lbs). PVC and split columns are decorative only.
Exact capacity varies by style and size, but even the smallest load-bearing option provides more than enough support for most residential projects.
No. Split columns are decorative only. For a load-bearing column, choose an unsplit plan type in a load-bearing material like fiberglass or aluminum.
All of our available column materials are capable of wrapping a structural post.
PVC column wraps are specifically designed to wrap posts and are not suitable for load-bearing applications. They are shipped in pieces and are ready to reassemble around structural posts. They feature interlocking joints that make installation a breeze.
Fiberglass columns can wrap posts also, but they need to be specifically ordered split.
Aluminum columns are available as post wraps that arrive unassembled and snap together around a structural post.
No matter what material you choose, make sure that the inside diameter or width of your column is large enough to fit the post you are wrapping. If you are wrapping a square or rectangular post, the largest dimension is the diagonal dimension from corner to corner. If you are wrapping a round post, the largest dimension is the diameter of your pole.
Yes. Load-bearing columns will carry weight whether they're required to or not, so they're a safe choice for any application — structural or purely decorative.
No. All column wraps are decorative, either because the material isn't structural (PVC) or because the column is split to install around a post. If you need structural support, the post inside the wrap must carry the weight.
Fiberglass, PVC, urethane, and wood columns can be painted. You can paint your columns with an exterior-grade acrylic latex primer and paint. Aluminum columns are available primed ready to paint or pre-finished. Wood columns can be stained, and urethane columns can be gel-stained.
Yes — columns work great for pergolas and other free-standing projects, with one requirement: there must be a structural post inside the column, anchored to concrete, because the column itself isn't rated for lateral movement. All of our columns are hollow and can house an interior post; just verify the interior dimension is large enough to fit your specific post.
When selecting a column, you will need to choose the width/diameter and the overall height.
When selecting your height, keep in mind that columns are solid in foot increments and can be trimmed to length on-site. Measure the distance between the floor and ceiling where the column will be installed and select the next size up. For example, if the finished column will be 92" tall, then you should order an 8' column and trim it to the finished height.
To select the right width or diameter, the general rule of thumb is that a column should be roughly 1/8 to 1/10 of its height. So:
• 8 ft ceiling → ~8–12 inch width/diameter
• 9 ft ceiling → ~10–14 inch width/diameter
• 10 ft ceiling → ~12–15 inch width/diameter
• 12 ft ceiling → ~14–18 inch width/diameter
• 14+ ft ceiling → 18–24 inch width/diameter
If you require a load-bearing column, be sure to select a size that has a sufficient load-bearing capacity. If your column will be installed around a structural support post, then be sure to select a column that is large enough to fit the largest dimension of your post.
With columns, bigger is often times better. When in doubt, go with the next size up.
